With a captivating presence on stage, Maestro Rafael Luz has pleased orchestra members and audiences alike, driving energetic and powerful performances leading to memorable experiences.

Growing up in Brazil, Rafael began his musical studies at the piano and later on the violin. His involvement in several choirs gave him his first opportunity to lead a group, sparking his passion for conducting. Rafael moved to Canada in 2010, where he joined the University of Toronto Opera School as an Assistant Conductor, and in 2016 graduated with a doctoral degree in conducting from the same institution.

Outside of music-making, Rafael has developed a keen interest in music management and development. He has worked with the National Ballet of Canada as Assistant Librarian, and served as a Technical Revisor for EdUSP, one of Brazil’s largest university publishers. In the field of music education, Rafael served as an instructor for the Projeto Guri, a Sistema-like program teaching music in lower-income areas in Sao Paulo.

Maestro Luz first conducted the North York Concert Orchestra in September 2014 and soon thereafter was appointed Music Director and Conductor, a role that he is proud to have had since.
